Just popping by to let you know that I have decided to follow the example of my winged, feathered friends and migrate. Ages 3 and Up! will no longer be posting at this address. You can find us at our new address, http://ages3andup.wordpress.com . The new site has all of our archived posts, a colorful new look, and a pretty new logo too!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I wanted to pop in to wish you and yours a very happy holiday, hopefully filled with family, friends and good food. I also wanted to say howdy! It's been a while since I've been able to update the Ages 3 and Up! blog with a playlist, mostly because of some technical problems with WRFL's website, and it's been a REALLY long while since I've been able to provide you with an update on what's going on with me, my family, and my other projects. I've just been so darned busy!

Here's a quick run down:

We (Kid-O and I) still do Ages 3 and Up! every Saturday morning from 8-9 EST on WRFL FM. That's 88.1 FM on the dial in Lexington and Central Kentucky, or http://wrfl.fm/ online. We are going on 5 1/2 years now!

We launched a new program geared toward a national audience this past spring, called Pied Piper Radio. Doing the show was TOTAL fun, much like doing Ages 3 and Up! is, but producing it was a completely different experience. We learned a lot about what to do and what not to do, and about what seems to work and what doesn't. We produced twenty episodes, and made them available to radio stations and the general public through Public Radio Exchange. A couple of episodes even got played at a pretty great sounding station in Kodiak Island, Alaska. We just wrapped up production on PPR for the year, and will be working on episodes for our Spring/Summer season (due out in April or May of 2011). We're working on some nifty changes, that we think listeners of both of our programs will dig.

Originally, we intended for Ages 3 and Up! and Pied Piper Radio to be to completely different, distinct, mostly unrelated entities. Our intention has changed. We are working on some projects that will link the two programs. We don't want to make any announcements yet, but as soon as we get the details worked out, you (faithful Ages 3 and Up! readers and listeners) will be the first to know.

We also spent quite a lot of time working with Rock N Romp Lexington, an organzation that organizes a rock concert series for local kids. RNR Lex has ended its season for this year, but will be back in the Spring. You can keep up with what's happening with Rock N Romp by "Like"ing their Facebook page. (While you're there, you can also "Like" ours and Pied Piper's.)

Kid-O and I keep on keepin' on. He's in the third grade, and I'm working with a really nice department at the University of Kentucky. All in all, everyone seems pretty happy right now. That's not to say that the past year or so hasn't been without its challenges (because everyone's got those) but instead, to say that we are looking forward to what the future will bring. We are thankful for many people in our lives- our family, friends, and those who have lent their ears and offered support to us and our projects. We're also thankful for important things like food, shelter, and clean water; and for our talents and abilities, even the ones we might sometimes take for granted, like the ability walk, our senses, or the ability to read.

Alright! Let's wrap this up. I'm gonna leave you with the story of The Churkendoose. This comes from the Kiddie Records Weekly website. If you've been reading this blog or listening to Ages 3 and Up! for any amount of time, you'll know that it is one of my favorite resources. You may recognize the narrator on this as Ray Bolger. He's better known as the actor who played the Scarecrow on The Wizard of Oz.

I'm afraid there was no Playlist this week, because there was no Ages 3 and Up!. Unfortunately Kid-O got sick, and we were unable to do the show. EVEN MORE new stuff this week on Ages 3 and Up!. We were pleased to participate in the WORLD PREMIERE weekend for Keller Williams' Kids album. Williams in an accomplished adult performer (that is, one who performs for adults) who just put out his first album made especially for kids. It's good, too!

We played a really great song about a turkey, called "Lucy Lawcy." We liked it so much that we played a few other turkey songs, to go along with. We also heard something from Elizabeth Mitchell's AMAZING new album, called Sunny Day and the title track from Frances England's forthcoming album. It's a different sound for her, but we like it!

Well, because Gustafer Yellowgold was coming to Lexington the following Monday for a show presented by WRFL FM, The Morris Book Shop, Puccini's Smiling Teeth and Rock N Romp Lexington!!! This was a big day for Ages 3 and Up! and Rock N Romp Lexington! Our show happened just a few short hours before WRFL's Boomslang Fest presented its first show for kids and families. The concert featured super-fun ukulele songstress (and actress) Heidi Swedberg. Heidi had local faves The Swells backing her up, and they did a phenomenal job! We did have a bit of rain before and after our show, but fortunately the weather cooperated for a couple of hours.

We are so glad Heidi got to come visit with us, and that everyone got along so famously. We were also happy to present Heidi with the gift of paw paws, presented by Jill- an Ages 3 and Up! listener from Frankfort.

We also got to hear a fantastic musical story from Seals of the Great Waters, the new side project featuring members of Ages 3 and Up! fave, Snow Monster!.

Not a lot of new music on the show this week, but we did have a lot of fun. AND we got to play a couple of songs about mad scientists in honor of our friend Renee, who tried her best to do science experiments for the enjoyment of the Boomslang Rock N Romp audience.

Have I blogged about how much I LOVE Many Hands: Family Music for Haiti??? Because I DO! I know I've mentioned it on Ages 3 and Up! and posted about it on our Facebook page, but it seems in all the rushing I've been doing lately, I totally forgot to do it here. Let me tell you why I love it; it is the first collection of music to feature mostly stars of the Kindie Rock movement (many of whom we play weekly on Ages 3 and Up! ), nearly ALL the tracks are fantastic and exclusive to this album, and the proceeds from the sale of the album go to a good cause- The Haitian People's Support Project. This is seriously one of the best albums of the year. And, oh yeah- we played it this week. :)

We also played a bunch of fun counting and alphabet songs, and gave you sneak peeks of the upcoming Boomslang Rock N Romp and Gustafer Yellowgold shows.

We played a lot of music this week on Ages 3 and Up! Some of it was quite new, and quite good (The Okee Dokee Brothers, Caspar Babypants, the Flannery Brothers and Brian Vogan and His Good Buddies) and some of it was not at all new- but still quite good! One of those songs was "Free To Be You And Me," the title track from the album pictured above. This song has recently been featured in a television ad for the Target chain. I don't know that the spirit of the song was entirely in sync with advertising for a big box chain, but there it was, anyway. We also heard a song in honor of International Read Comics In Public Day, and some songs in honor of the return of students to the University of Kentucky's campus.

This week on Ages 3 and Up!, we celebrated the fleeting, last days of summer. There were only a few days left before the public schools around Central Kentucky began their 2010-2011 terms, so we decided to enjoy songs about sunglasses, the summer time and balloons. We also played a song in honor of Ella Jenkins' 86th birthday and a couple of tunes in honor of a VERY special holiday... one that had never happened in my lifetime and never will again. A holiday SO SPECIAL and so fleeting (like the summer) that it only lasts for ONE SECOND. That holiday was 05:06:07 8/9/10, and celebrating it made us super happy :) .

We had a lot going on this week on Ages 3 and Up!. In addition to playing new music from the Many Hands: Family Music For Haiti compilation, Pete Seeger, and The Okee Dokee Brothers, we had special guests in the studio. Sydney, Caitlin and David came in to talk to us about the upcoming benefit for Almira Fawn. Some of you might remember that Almira visited our show recently. Unfortunately, she lost her mom just days afterward. The local music community has been coming together to support Almira in her time of loss by organizing a series of benefit concerts. And, of course, we were glad to help spread the word. We also played a bunch of songs about magic, featuring the Dukas classic, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." We were figuring a lot of families might have seen the recent Disney action/adventure film who might not have read the poem or heard the song on which it was based- so we played it! AND we played some Wizard Rock, in honor of the Wizard Wrock Wroundup!, which was held at The Morris Book Shop on August 2nd. For those of you unfamiliar, Wizard Rock, is a musical trend that features bands and artists making music about the Harry Potter series of books. Pretty fun!

Gosh! We seem to be playing A LOT of new music on Ages 3 and Up! these days. Not that that's a bad thing... It seems a lot of new music for kids is being produced, so I guess we have more of it to play? Anyway- TONS of new stuff this week. Most of what we played has just been released in the past year, and the REALLY new stuff we played hasn't been released yet, at all.

REALLY new stuff from Jonathan Coulton, coming from a big deal various artists compilation called Many Hands: Family Music For Haiti. As the name implies, it is a benefit album, for the Hatian Peoples' Support Project- put out by friends of ours, including Dean Jones from Dog On Fleas and Bill Childs from Spare The Rock, Spoil The Child (another awesome kids' radio show from Northampton MA). It has lots of the superstars of the kids' music world playing songs that can't be found anywhere else, and will be available to the public on August 10th.

More REALLY new stuff from Todd McHatton. His second album, Sundays At The Rocket Park will be available later this week, on July 21st. This album is also pretty incredible. Lightly psychedelic pop for kids- recommended for fans of Gustafer Yellowgold, Dr. Seuss, Yellow Submarine, Syd and Marty Krofft.

This week Ages 3 and Up! was one of four children's music programs in the United States to premiere a track from the highly anticipated, forthcoming, second album from The Not-Its! . We played "FANTASTIC," a more developed version of a track we first heard on a demo they sent us back in August of 2008, some time before their first album was released. The song was formerly titled "My Favorite Person." Love it! We played more songs along that line for all of our favorite people out there, including songs from Dan Zanes and Friends and Billy Kelly. We played "Caterpillar Caterpillar," in honor of Eric Carle's birthday, and a BUNCH of nonsense songs.

WHERE'S THE PLAYER????

Well... the short answer is that there isn't one, because we are no longer going to be posting audio files at the Ages 3 and Up! blog. Never fear, though... there's a long answer too!

Ages 3 and Up! has been broadcasting in Lexington KY for about five years now, and maintained an internet presence (this blog) for about two of those. We started our blog as a way to meet other folks in the kids' music industry- particularly other DJ's, and artists. We ended up meeting a lot of those folks, and some other great ones too- including bloggers, PR reps, and people involved in other forms of children's media. We also developed listenership and a fan base outside of Lexington, which was something we were not expecting. We've known for some time that we would not be able to continue blogging at Ages 3 and Up! in exactly the same way we have been, for a number of reasons, and have been working on developing an alternate internet presence.

Lexingtonians- no worries, we are still going to be broadcasting live at WRFL FM from 8-9 EST every Saturday morning, as Ages 3 and Up!. Everyone else, you are welcome to join us on WRFL's stream (http://wrfl.fm/) . Ages 3 and Up! has always been a community based show, and we plan to become even more of one- focusing more on local and regional fun for families.

What's the difference?

Well.. Ages 3 and Up! is a live, local broadcast, which means it is somewhat more spontaneous and pretty much anything could happen. Sometimes that's good- sometimes not so much. You'll hear new music first on Ages 3 and Up!, and will hear more about things happening in Lexington KY.

Pied Piper Radio is a produced program, made for a national audience. Which means a bit more thought goes into the content, you will hear less about Lexington KY, and you'll hear fewer technical foul-ups, etc. There will be album features, and eventually interviews and exclusive content. Pied Piper Radio will also be available to a wider audience. Not only will you be able to listen online, non-commercial radio stations interested in playing Pied Piper Radio will be able to pick it up through our distributor, http://prx.org/.

The musical selections for the two shows will be very similar.

Thanks for coming back to Ages 3 and Up! This week we played April showers, produce songs, a little Mary Poppins/kite set, poetry (in honor of National Poetry Month) and kid-friendly-early-electronic music.

Did you know some of the earliest, most influencial electronic music was made for children? Raymond Scott's Soothing Sounds for Baby series, for example, was introduced in 1963. Bruce Haack and Esther Nelson put out several albums for kids on their Dimension 5 label in the 60's. You can hear their "Popcorn" song below. You can also hear important early electronic pop, that wasn't necessarily made for kids but is WAY kid friendly, from Perrey and Kingsley-circa 1966.

Happy Easter! This week on Ages 3 and Up! we celebrated spring just a little bit more. We played perennial fave, "Tubby the Tuba." Listened to vintage Easter songs, and paid homage to an egg who deserves remembrance this time of year (that's right... Humpty Dumpty!). We also played lovely songs about horses, in honor of the opening of Keeneland's spring meet.

The "Hip-Hop Humpty Dumpty" song we played comes from the album pictured above, Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer's Banjo to Beatbox. It's really a VERY interesting album, combining bluegrass with beatbox, as implied by the title. Definitely worth a listen!

This week on Ages 3 and Up! we had A LOT of technical problems. You couldn't really hear it all, but we celebrated the coming of Spring, played music from artists featured at the Rock N' Romp and played another great Gustafer Yellowgold song, in honor of Gustafer Yellowgold month.

We also played a set for March Madness- you see, we broadcast from the University of Kentucky, and people go a little crazy over basketball here this time of year. The picture above is not an exaggeration. People actually walk around in the streets looking like this.. I'm not kidding. So, we embraced our inner basketball fan and played fun basketball songs. (Billy from The Blue Yodel No. 9, the bluegrass show that follows Ages 3 and Up!, was so inspired by our basketball set that he started his show with Kurtis Blow's "Basketball." For those of you unfamiliar, Kurtis Blow is old school hip hop- very un-bluegrass. We're glad we could be an inspiration!)

A word about the wonderful Irish kids' song I couldn't pronounce: It comes from this CD/book combo (pictured right). Quince from The Speks, whose "Saint Patrick's Day" song we played, called from Ireland to let me know that the name of the song is pronounced "Kay Vade Mare," and the CD/book is pronounced "Googley Goog." The title of the song we heard means "How Many Fingers?"- it's a counting song! It turns out that The Speks are friends with the people who put out Gugalai' Gug!- small world, indeed!

Another word about Rock N' Romp: It happens Saturday, March 20th at Al's Bar in Lexington, Ky. Al's Bar is located on the corner of Sixth and Limestone. Snow Monster! will be there with Tula and The Swells, and you MUST have a child with you in order to be admitted. Like we said on the show, kidnapping is strongly discouraged. If you decide to bring a child with you who is not your own, make sure you have permission from his or her parents. :)

It's Gustafer Yellowgold Month at Ages 3 and Up! All during the month of March we will be featuring Gustafer Yellowgold both on the show and here, at the blog. This week we played "I'm From the Sun," a brief introduction to Gustafer from his first release, Wide Wild World (pictured above). For those of you unfamiliar, Gustafer Yellowgold is a little fellow who came to our planet from the sun. His CD/DVD sets tell his stories about the friends he meets and things he comes to love while on our planet. I recently contributed to an as of yet unpublished list of the best kids records of all time, and the Gustafer Yellowgold series topped my list. The songs are so good, so original, so inventive and full of imagination. Gustafer is easy for kids to identify with, because he is very much like a child- experiencing our world for the first time, full of wonder. Seriously...if you haven't yet met Gustafer Yellowgold, you are missing out. Check out the video below the player.

We did play other things besides Gustafer Yellowgold. They were really good too! Notable and new were the Flannery Brothers' Move Over Lullabies...It's Time For Wake Up Songs!, Jad and David Fair's Six Dozen Cookies, and Dan Zanes and Friends' 76 Trombones. This week we played all jazz, in honor of the Mardi Gras festivies in New Orleans- the birthplace of jazz. I've just recently acquired three new fantastic jazz records for kids, including Coal Train Railroad's debut (pictured above). More about those below. We played a couple of other FANTASTIC new jazz albums for kids, including the one pictured to your left. It comes from Putumayo Records' long running, spectacular, kids' series featuring music from all over the world. It's entitled Putumayo Kids Presents: Jazz Playground. My faves are the Oran Etkin and Charenee Wade track I played, called "Little Lamb Jam," a GREAT version of "Sing a Song of Six Pence," and another swell version of "This Little Light of Mine."

The release pictured to your right comes from The Baby Loves Jazz Band and was put out by the folks who do Baby Loves Disco, in conjunction with jazz great, Verve Records. The "Scat Song" we played comes from the first in their series of jazz records for kids, entitled Go Baby Go.

It seemed fitting this week to feature the latest compilation from Greasy Kid Stuff- what with the picture of George Washington bathing a gigantic rat, and all... The great song we played about General Washington by The Galactic Heroes appears on Greasy Kid Stuff 3, as does Key Wilde & Mr. Clarke's "Favorite Names" (we played the song from their newly released Rise and Shine).

I'm really happy about having the chance to gush over Greasy Kid Stuff, because they are Ages 3 and Up!'s heroes! For those of you who don't know, Greasy Kid Stuff is a long running (15 years, I think?) radio program for kids, currently broadcasting from KNRK in Portland, Oregon. Everyone has influences, including radio shows and radio stations. In fact, WFMU, the radio station Greasy Kid Stuff originally broadcasted from, was influencial to the folks who established our happy home, WRFL. Though Greasy Kid Stuff is not the reason our show exists, they certainly have shaped what we've become, and so we send a gigantic shout out to them!

The past few weeks, we've started the show with songs from the CD pictured to your left. Michael Rachap put together this WONDERFUL project called Readeez some time ago. It's a series of DVD's comprised of animated shorts put to music, designed to encourage reading. Much to my delight (mostly because it's difficult to play DVD's on the radio and in my car), he released a CD of the music from Readeez, called Songeez. It and the entire Readeez project are SO worthwhile- definitely check it out!

This week on Ages 3 and Up! things did not really go as planned. I played the wrong song four times, equipment failed, a visitor to the University of Kentucky's lovely campus dropped in for directions, and Kid-O needed my help mustering up the bravery to use WRFL's dingy, old, disgusting, dark and scary bathroom. Arrgh... It was, simply put, a bad week.

But, that's the way things go sometimes, so we rolled with it and did our best!

Having such a great selection of new music and old favorites definitely helped. New to us this week was More Please!, the nifty follow up release from Caspar Babypants. Also new to Ages 3 and Up! was The Speks' Sing Along Songs From Glasses Island, Los Lobos Goes Disney, Renee and Jeremy's C'mon, and the various artist compliation from Yo Gabba Gabba, called Music is Awesome!

We featured the album pictured above, John and Mark's Children's Record. Like we said on the show, John and Mark are John Upchurch and Mark Greenberg from The Coctails. The Coctails put out a 7" record many years ago, called Songs For Children, which later appeared on Early Hi-Ball Years. We played "Old Gray Mare" from that release. We also played "Itchy Itchy Hay Hay" from Georgia and August Greenberg's Sing Songs For You and Me. Mark is Georgia and August's dad! According to Mark, these days Georgia and August are making some wonderful animations. Hopefully, we'll soon have some of those to post here at Ages 3 and Up! If you'd like, you can download Sing Songs for You and Me for free. You can also download some fantastic coloring pages, drawn by Archer Prewitt, who was also a member of the The Coctails and a number of other prominent Chicago area bands.

It's been a while (4 mos.) since I posted anything to Ages 3 and Up! and I'm popping in today to let you know that I and the show have been, and will continue to be, on hiatus until January of 2010. I'm still accepting submissions and reviewing them for airplay when the show resumes, at the beginning of the University of Kentucky's spring semester. This week on Ages 3 and Up! we heard more of the new project from Gustafer Yellowgold and from Dan Zanes' gospel release. We also listened to even more nifty songs about pirates, including a track from Captain Bogg & Salty's newest (pictured above). This is NOT a Dr. Seuss tribute album. It is, however, totally charming. Lake's new album, Oh, The Places We'll Go isn't a kids' record, at all. It's just one I like. It truly is a Beautiful World. I LOVE this album... I've gone on record saying The Harmonica Pocket's Ladybug One is my favorite record of 2008, and now declare Dog On Fleas' most recent my OTHER favorite record of 2008. So good... lyrical, wonderful, beautiful, and sometimes kind of rockin' too.

11/22 was the show before Thanksgiving this year, so I have to say that Ages 3 and Up! is thankful for this album, all you kind listeners and readers, all the great friends we've made this year and for the support of our beloved WRFL. Thanks to all of you!

Songs about trains, we were finally able to play Kira Willey's oft requested "Caterpillar" song, songs about using your imagination and songs about standing up for what you believe in. We featured new music from The Harmonica Pocket and Little Miss Ann.

The Harmonica Pocket's Ladybug One is offically my favorite release of 2008! It is, in fact, so good that I have trouble finding words to describe it.

That's all.... that's my review.

Not really...Okay. So, at times it features a song about bioluminescense, infectious pop about curious spiders, a song about a tree that won't be cut down (ironically, featuring a singing saw), a Southern American folk song backed by sitar and tablas, a Hindi lullaby, a gorgeous song about the moon- sung partially in Spanish, and a number of other fantastic instrumentals. I'm totally picky, and LOVE this album.

This week on Ages 3 and Up! we got locked out of the car. Seriously. If you click the player below, you can hear me whine about it.

Things could definitely have gone better, but they also could have gone worse. As I am an eternal optimist, here is a list of GREAT things that happened as a result of my losing the car keys while frolicking in a pile of leaves at the park:

1. I got to spend quality time trick-or-treating with my sister on Halloween.
2. Kid-O didn't actually trick-or-treat as George Bush (original costume pictured at right).
3. I got to visit a friend who I would not otherwise have seen on Halloween- because he lived close to the park and we needed a ride.
4. I didn't warp Kid-O's mind by taking him to the Thriller re-enactment before he was ready.
5. I saved some gas.
6. I didn't have to carry a huge bag of CD's to WRFL in the morning, or worry about forgetting anything when I left the station.
7. I got to play a funny song about a vampire that I would not otherwise have played.
8. I was able to frolick in the same pile of leaves the next day, while looking for the car keys.
9. We got to celebrate when we FOUND the car keys in the pile of leaves!! Hooray!
10. I was able to take THIS opportunity to think about how much worse things could have been, and be thankful for the fact that they weren't. Hooray again!!

We didn't actually celebrate Dia De Los Muertos, but if you did, we hope you had a fantastic holiday. The picture to the left is of Kid-O practicing his reading skills at the Lexington Cemetary a few weeks ago. If you're local, and haven't been there, you really should go. It's a BEAUTIFUL place, and great for learning about Lexington's early history/explaining to your young that cemetaries aren't spooky- they're just parks for dead people.

About "Florence's Sad Song"- This version was recorded by Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian, and appears on the Songs For the Young at Heart compilation. The song originally aired in 1972 on the BBC's The Magic Roundabout series, in a feature length episode entitled Dougal and the Blue Cat, and was later released as a 7" single on the Music for Pleasure label. This is, indeed, the saddest children's song I've ever heard. If you'd like to see clips from The Magic Roundabout or Dougal and the Blue Cat, you can do it by searching YouTube.

After reading a brief article in this month's issue of Cookie magazine and seeing a photo of Clare Crespo's "Creepy Sweet," (buried alive cupcakes, pictured left) I decided I just HAD to check out the YummyFun Kooking website.

Y'know... Sometimes things just don't go your way. It's not necessarily that they go badly, just unexpectedly. This week on Ages 3 and Up! things DIDN'T go as planned. And, thanks to the joy and spontaineity of live broadcasting, you get to hear it all! Absolutely one of my new favorites!

Glad to be back on Ages 3 and Up! this week. We had new music from Kimya Dawson, as well as not-so-new music from The Hipwaders, Barry Louis Polisar, Steve Martin (yeah...the comedian) and lots of other folks. A few notes:I've mixed emotions on the new Kimya record, Alphabutt. There are some AWESOME songs on it, like "Little Monster Babies," "Bobby-O," "Wiggle My Tooth," "Smoothie," and "Happy Home." Others are written specifically for her (probably) two-year old, Panda and are particularly potty training-centric. Still others are FAR more politically charged than I, personally, care for "We're All Animals" and "Sunbeams and Some Beans." I dunno... I guess I don't care much for mixing music and politics. "Seven Hungry Tigers," in particular would have been great if it hadn't said the "S-Word." -We don't say "sucks" in my house. Some parents will really dig this. I have some reservations about it, is all.

Tito from The Hipwaders was kind enough to send me some of their CD's and I dug 'em. Definitely worthy of attention.

I don't play enough Barry Louis Polisar on Ages 3 and Up!... I really don't. This guy is fantastic. They've got a lot of his releases at the Lexington Public Library so you could, very literally, check him out.

And as I mentioned, Steve Martin played banjo on Lisa Loeb's newest release, Camp Lisa. "King Tut" is one of his stand-up hits, one I thought was hilarious when I was wee. If you want to hear more of his bluegrass stylings, he's got a banjo record coming out later this year (I think).

Is anyone else out there a first born? Was anyone else kinda MAD when their parents came home with the new baby??? Well, I was. S'alright, though... I'm over it now, and am really quite fond of my sister. But, back in "the day" I'm pretty sure I shared the sentiments expressed in both the songs we started with this week on Ages 3 and Up! Yeah, a new baby's kind of exciting, but there were definitely days when I wished my parents had brought home a puppy instead. Anyhoo....

So, this week we started with The Happy Flowers, who were screaming about childhood angst before WRFL was even conceived. For more information about them, you can click here. I kind of expected some Un-Happy Flowers to call about them, but instead we got a very happy caller, who said he hadn't heard them in years, and was glad we were playing them on WRFL's kids' show. Go figure.

We told some terrible jokes and played songs about going back to school, including a FABULOUS song about starting kindergarten, by The Not-Its! We also got back to the classics with an excerpt from Ravel's Mother Goose Suite, and heard new music from Danielle Sansone (review coming later this week....maybe.)

Umm... So, Hey! Have I mentioned that I'm really quite fond of this compilation? It was put together by some guys from a band called Tindersticks. I have to admit that I've never heard them, 'cause I'm just not that hip... BUT this is one of my fave various artist releases. It was kind of pricey, and I really didn't expect much from it, so I was delightfully surprised by it. It comes packaged in a boardbook illustrated by Sexton Ming and features a number of laid back instrumentals and folk renditions.... done in a way that you don't often hear them these days.... Oh! And some (kind of macabre) kids stories. And, to give it indie cred, there's a cover of "Puff the Magic Dragon" by Bonnie Prince Billy. Well worth checking out!

What is it about holidays that ALWAYS seems to throw me off? Is it that deviation from the routine disables your ability to cope with the unexpected? WOW! I can't believe it's been a couple of weeks since I posted. I've been busy working at work and haven't had an opportunity to catch up. I'm TOTALLY feeling Arthur Askey's "Bee Song."
